RMD Aggregation Rules — IRA vs 401(k)

Which accounts can be aggregated for RMD withdrawals and which cannot.

RMD aggregation rules determine whether you can take the total RMD from one account or must calculate separately.

Traditional IRAs

  • Calculate RMD separately for each IRA
  • Withdraw the total from any one or combination of IRAs

  • 401(k) / 403(b) / 457(b)

  • Calculate RMD separately for each plan
  • Must withdraw from each plan individually — no aggregation across plans
  • Cannot aggregate with IRAs

  • Roth accounts

  • Roth IRA: No lifetime RMD for owner
  • Roth 401(k): No RMD since 2024 (can roll to Roth IRA to avoid future issues)

  • Our calculator handles multiple accounts and shows per-account and total RMD amounts.
